Favorite Lunch Yet!

It was a mixture of a lot of things that led me to experiencing the best Priory lunch I’ve eaten all year, a grilled Rueben Sandwich. Maybe it was the craving for something hot on a rainy day. Maybe it was the longing for something new on the menu. Maybe that sandwich I thought it tasted out of the box good. I don’t really know what it was that made the rueben sandwich so tasty, but I do know that after my first bite I thought “This is my favorite lunch, by far, of the year!”…

A rueben sandwich consists of corned beef, melted swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and thousand island dressing. You can recognize rueben sandwiches by the rye bread with the brown and white swirly pattern. The one time I’ve seen someone eat a rueben sandwich was when my grandfather chowed it down at a local pub halfway our road trip to LA. The moment I saw what he was eating my French onion soup suddenly didn’t look too appetizing. My grandmother always tells me that corned beef is unhealthy because of the sodium, so I try to stay away from it. However, today the lunch appeared too hard to resist. My mouth was literally drawn to it.

I love how all the elements in this food “work” together. The sour kraut is sour, the dressing is sweet, the cheese is neutral yet flavorful, and the corned beef is salty. The sandwich is perfectly layered, so that on each bite you get to experience all of the ingredients. I don’t want to confuse you too much, so my summary of the rueben sandwich would be that it tastes amazing. Nothing more nothing less, it’s just my favorite lunch yet!

There used to be a restaurant at the Stanford mall called Max’s opera cafe that had the best Reuben sandwiches and you could listen to one of the waitresses or waiters play a song on the piano. Probably got replaced by another cupcake store selling $8 cupcakes

Hi Nate, thanks for sharing about the components of a Reuben sandwich. I did not realize there was thousand island dressing in it. The next time I see a Reuben sandwich on the menu, I will have to order it so I can examine the ingredients myself!

  3. Nice post :)) The Reuben looks amazing… :))
