I’m guessing that a lot of you LOVE dumplings. If so, then take one night off and try Din Tai Fung, a famous Chinese dumpling house with exceptionally superb dishes. After you exit this fine Asian style restaurant, you’ll never want to try P.F Chang or Panda Express EVER again. Actually, you probably don’t want to dine at those Chinese restaurants again even in general:).
Although the “real” Din Tai Fung is in Taiwan, I don’t see any difference between that and any other Din Tai Fung. Because Din Tai Fung is a dumpling focused restaurant, there are, well you know, more than 20 types of these traditional foods. The most popular item available at Din Tai Tung is Xiao Long Bao. About half the size of a potsticker, Xiao Long Baos hold a combination of soft pork and delicious soup, drawn right from the meat. I love to poke a hole in the Xiao Long Bao and then pour all the contents into a bowl. After I do this with 3-5 of them, I devour the bowl of Xiao Long Bao insides (not to sound disgusting). DELICIOUS!
Two of my next favorite dishes are the beef noodle soup and dou miao (simple pea sprouts soaked in a garlic-ish sauce). The beef noodle soup is a giant bowl of veggies and beef slices soaked in a somewhat spicy broth. Both these dishes go extremely well with the Xiao Long Bao, so I recommend trying the triad to make a perfect dining experience.
If you ever do intend on dining at Din Tai Fung, go early because boy does that place get nasty crowded (even in Santa Clara). In addition, expect an extremely full stomach because after you finish your first 4 rounds of food, you’ll still be craving for more.

This is great! I loved Din Tai Fung in China and I didn’t know there was finally one in here, in the Bay area, too! Also, Xiao Long Bao is my son (Alborz)’s favorite dumpling, and mine too! I am going to tell Alborz to also subscribe to your blog.
Keep on finding good food and good places too eat.

Thanks! I didn’t know you went to China. I have been to Din Tai Fungs in China and they actually have more dishes there so it looks like you picked the right place!

Which DTF did you go to in Taipei? Wasn’t it cool watching them make the XLBs? For like 3 hours waiting for a table… All the restaurants are amazing but I think the ones in Taipei are just a little better. Bring an empty stomach and a full wallet next time. And try the string beans next time!

We didn’t go to the original one because because it was closed. We went to one in an underground shopping complex. It was still very good!

Nate,
We went to this restaurant based on your recommendation. They had a 3 hour long wait. We could not wait that long.
The food must be good. Maybe next time!
